Amalen’s inviting character is ever-present. As you enter the courtyard, you’re welcomed by an ambiance that encapsulates the Cretan essence. The rock forms create large surfaces on the ground and imposing vertical lines that lead the gaze to the sky. The two fountains and their flowing in the surrounding area reference the island’s organic relationship with the water – the fountains scattered throughout the Old Town, the Aegean Sea, and the waterfalls of the countless gorges. The presence of the water, the plants, and the subtle music from the mini speakers create an oasis, a soothing scenery second to none – whether you are enjoying your breakfast or your favorite summer reading.
As for the suites’ interiors, nothing spells premium better than their carefully curated design – from the faucets to the reconstructed, authentic Ottoman locks of each suite, which come from residences of the Old Town of Rethimno. The full-height windows let the Mediterranean light define every aspect of the space, creating a manifold effect. The result defies the mediocre and embraces the outstanding – as you can clearly see.
In total, Amalen successfully blends the best of both worlds: the past and the future. We sought out the best examples of Cretan mastery and incorporated them into the premises. The drainpipes are made in a traditional way in Margarites, a village near Rethimno with a rich heritage in pottery. The handmade element adds its touch to the atmosphere in many ways, such as the clay tiles of the suite floors or the glass panes. Traditional craftsmanship and upcycled decorative and functional elements coexist with modern amenities and green practices—such as energy-efficient appliances, use of renewable energy sources through net metering, or recycling. It was a conscious choice and the only way to create a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience that addresses all senses. Simple in form, not simplistic in meaning.
